The president says in a statement on Tuesday that the Republican Party will never again get the support of the people, if people like McConnell still have power and influence, reports the news agency Reuters.
“Mitch is a quarrelsome, angry and grave political clown, and if Republican senators stay by his side, they will never win again,” Trump said.
Trump also threatens that in next year’s congressional election he will only give his support to Republican candidates who support his “Make America Great Again” movement.
The statement comes three days after McConnell in a speech condemned the ex-president, even though the minority leader did not vote to acquit him in the Supreme Court case.
At the same time, opinion polls have shown that Trump would have won the Republicans’ primary election with 53 percent of the vote, if the election was held today, writes The Independent.
