Ski jumping, biathlon, cross-country skiing and Co.: results and short news from winter sports.
Combination: On Sunday, Johannes Lamparter took the lead in the overall World Cup for the first time in his career as a Nordic combined athlete. The 20-year-old doubled at the Klingenthal stop after his win the day before, won after his ex aequo victory in the vault with Styrian Franz-Josef Rehrl ahead of Estonian Kristjan Ilves, who also placed second the day before, and Rehrl, who came seventh on Saturday. The third best Austrian was Lukas Greiderer in eleventh (+47.9).
Lamparter broke away from Ilves and Rehrl at the start of the last of four 2.5K laps, winning 8.4 seconds ahead of the Estonian and 8.7 seconds ahead of Rehrl respectively. Lamparter now comes to the World Cup triple in Seefeld at the end of January with a 100-point lead over the Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber, who was pausing in Klingenthal and before that in Val di Fiemme. The World Cup in Planica, which was planned for next weekend, has been cancelled.
ski jumping: Marius Lindvik won the individual competition in Zakopane. The Norwegian triumphed with the highest jump of 139.5 m in the second round ahead of Karl Geiger (GER) and Anze Lanisek (SLO). Daniel Tschofenig was still on course for the podium at half-time in second place, but dropped back to fifth in the decision-making process. With Daniel Huber (6th) and Jan Hörl (8th) and Clemens Aigner (11th), the ÖSV-Adler once again presented themselves as a strong team.
Tobogganing: Madeleine Egle clinched her fifth luge World Cup victory this winter on Sunday. In Oberhof, the Tyrolean again proved her best form and won with a lead of two hundredths of a second over the German Julia Taubitz. Three other Germans lined up behind Taubitz, before Hannah Prock followed in sixth place. In the overall standings, Egle is still in second place behind Taubitz.
Egle had already won the Olympic dress rehearsal in Yanqing as well as in Altenberg, Innsbruck (sprint) and most recently in Sigulda. The team relay was still on the program in Oberhof on Sunday afternoon.
Biathlon: Lisa Hauser finished the World Cup pursuit race of the biathletes over ten kilometers on Sunday in Ruhpolding in tenth place. The 28-year-old Tyrolean, who finished sixth in the sprint on Wednesday, missed three shots. Victory went to the flawless Norwegian Marte Olsbu Röiseland ahead of the Swedish sisters Elvira and Hanna Öberg.
Snowboard: Snowboarder Anna Gasser was beaten only by Australian Tess Coady in her first Slopestyle World Cup this winter. With 78.56 points, the Carinthian had a respectful distance to the 21-year-old, who had already dominated the qualification and finally triumphed with 86.18 points at the Olympic dress rehearsal in Laax on Saturday. Third place in the final of the top eight went to Germany’s Annika Morgan (76.61 points).
Nordic combination: Johannes Lamparter celebrated his second World Cup victory in Nordic Combined on Saturday, one week after his victory premiere in Val di Fiemme. The double world champion won in Klingenthal after third place in jumping after 25:18.5 minutes in the 10 km track, 0.3 seconds ahead of Estonian Kristjan Ilves and 0.7 ahead of Ryota Yamamoto. With places seven and eight, Franz-Josef Rehrl and Mario Seidl ensured further top ten places for the ÖSV.
ski jumping: The Austrian ski jumpers finished fourth in the third World Cup team competition of the season. After victories in Wisla and in Bischofshofen last week, Daniel Huber, Daniel Tschofenig, Clemens Aigner and Jan Hörl were more than 20 points short of a podium finish in Zakopane on Saturday. The victory went to Slovenia, who held their ground in front of Germany and Japan and had a lead of more than 90 points on Austria.
Snowboard 2: The only mixed parallel giant slalom of the snowboarders this World Cup season was won by Alexander Payer and Sabine Schöffmann on Saturday. The red-white-red duo triumphed on the Simonhöhe in Carinthia in front of the Germans Stefan Baumeister and Melanie Hochreiter as well as Lee Sang-ho and Jeong Hae-rim from South Korea.
Para-Ski: Carinthian Markus Salcher also won the Super-G after the downhill at the Para Ski World Championships in Hafjell. The 30-year-old clearly triumphed in the standing class on Saturday ahead of the Russian Alexej Bugayev (+ 1.39 seconds) and the Swiss Theo Gmür (1.50). As in 2013 and 2017, Salcher got the speed double. In the visually impaired category, Johannes Aigner secured his first World Championships medal in second place with guide Matteo Fleischmann.
Biathlon: Austria’s biathletes did not finish the third relay competition of the season among the top ten nations either. With twelfth place, the ÖSV quartet achieved their best result so far in Ruhpolding on Saturday. The victory in the German biathlon Mecca went to Russia ahead of Germany and Belarus. Austria’s team consisting of David Komatz/Simon Eder/Patrick Jakob/Harald Lemmerer allowed ten spare rounds and was 3:19.9 minutes behind the winner.
Bob: Bob pilot Markus Treichl finished 12th at the World Cup in St. Moritz with pusher Markus Glück and finished 12th at the European Championships. Austria’s top driver Benjamin Maier was not at the start at the last station before the Olympic Games after a corona infection, as was the case last time in Winterberg. The Tyrolean had not received a negative test result by Thursday. The German top favorites Francesco Friedrich/Thorsten Margis secured European Championship gold and the World Cup victory.
Tobogganing: The Austrian lugers just missed out on the podium at the World Cup in Oberhof on Saturday with two fourth places thanks to doubles Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller and Nico Gleirscher. In the penultimate race of the season, Steu/Koller were 37 thousandths of a second behind in third place, Gleirscher around a tenth of a second in a German triple victory. The women’s race with the four-time winner of the season, Madeleine Egle, and the team relay follow on Sunday.
