This Tuesday around 7:45 p.m., a little girl drowned in the Donkvijver pond in Oudenaarde, Flanders, near the Absolut surf club. Passers-by witnessed the scene, a member of the surf club then dove in to rescue the 6-year-old child and gave him first aid. The emergency services then quickly arrived on the scene and took over before transporting the girl to the UZ in Ghent.
The circumstances of the accident are still unknown. According to a witness, the child, originally from Oudenaarde, was playing with two cousins in the recreation area and then headed for the pond. It should be noted that swimming is prohibited there, so no lifeguard monitors the place.
