And the antioxidant resveratrol may provide heart benefits by drinking a glass of wine every night – especially red grapes.
According to a report published in the Canadian Journal of Clinical Nutrition, thetannins contained in red wine – procyanidins – are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. “The antioxidants in wine increase HDL, good cholesterol, while strengthening the immune system,” says Dr. Kristine Arthur, internist at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. HDL helps prevent plaque build-up of ‘bad’ cholesterol in the arteries, which may also help prevent heart attacks and strokes. ” Make sure you recognize the signs that you are at risk of having a heart attack.
The key is moderation. “Chronic binge drinking is associated with weakening of the heart, called cardiomyopathy and heart failure in medical terms,” says Dr. Adrienne Youdim, FACP, internist and weight loss specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif.
