Drought: how do Belgians consume water in daily life?

Do Belgians consume a lot of water? A question all the more topical with all the restrictions in force due to the drought. Per year, the Belgian consumes an average of 90 liters of water per day. He is one of the good European students. We use for example less drinking water than the Italians or the Swedes.

Since the early 2000s, our water consumption has been falling. Thanks to more energy-efficient devices and greater ecological awareness.

What makes us use the most water in daily life? “Normally, what makes us use water the most are toilets, showers, baths…”says Cédric Prévedello, scientific advisor to Aquawal.

On average, a person consumes 96 liters of water per day in Brussels. 85 liters in Wallonia and 86 in Flanders.

When you take a bath, you use 120 liters of water. The quantity is halved with a shower: 60 liters.

An open tap lets out 13 liters of water per minute. When flushing the toilet, 6 to 12 liters are used.

You will also regularly wash your laundry: a recent small machine consumes an average of 50 liters of water for each wash.

In the kitchen, if you do the dishes yourself, you use 45 liters of water. A reduced quantity with a dishwasher: 12 liters of water…

At European level, those who consume the most drinking water are the Italians, followed by the Norwegians, Swedes and French.

The Belgians have half the consumption! What explains this difference?

“We never really knew why. We can imagine that there has been environmental awareness in Belgium for a very long time on the subject of water, which is very advanced”, adds Cédric Prévedello.

And if you want to reduce your water consumption even further, check that there are no leaks in your home.
