“Eight people have died: two Nigerians – a tourist guide and driver – and six French people,” said Governor Tidjani Ibrahim Katiella. The attackers arrived on motorcycles, the whole incident is now being investigated by the police.
According to France 24 television, the French Foreign Ministry is also investigating the attack. Militant groups operate in the area, including the radical Nigerian militia Boko Haram.
According to a source close to local environmental organizations, the attack was to take place on Sunday 11:30 local time (12:30 CET) six kilometers from the city of Kouré, which is located about 60 kilometers from the capital Niamey.
“Most of the victims were shot. We found empty containers at the crime scene, “a source told AFP. “We do not know the identity of the perpetrators, but they arrived on motorcycles and waited for the arrival of tourists,” he added.
The attack took place in an area that is home to the last herds of West African giraffes. Giraffes are one of the main tourist attractions of the country.
