A new fashion that interprets ‘active wear’ in a completely new direction has emerged. On the 17th (local time), Popular Science introduced a fiber that can act as a ‘mini power plant’ by mixing and weaving solar cells.

uk Nottingham Trent University The 51 x 27 centimeters e-fiber presented by the researchers contains 1,200 5 x 1.5 millimeter solar cells. It can generate about 400 milliwatts (mWatt) of electricity using solar power, so it can charge small devices such as mobile phones and smart watches.

Professor Theodore Hughes-Riley, head of the study, said, “The fiber we developed is no different from ordinary fiber in every way. It can be put together and folded and can be washed in the washing machine.”

The solar cell woven with yarn is chemically safe as it is wrapped in a waterproof polymer resin. The size is so small that there is no foreign body feeling when wearing it. When solar cell fibers are put to practical use, they are expected to be applied preferentially to outdoor clothing, backpacks, and carriers.

In addition to e-fiber, research on solar power, a new and renewable energy, continues in various fields. European Space Agencywill soon test a solar cell system orbiting the Earth. Since there is no distinction between day and night in space, it is expected that 8 to 9 times more electricity can be generated compared to the Earth’s surface.
