Economic activity in Chile had its first year-on-year drop in September | Economy

The Central Bank announced this Wednesday that in September 2022 the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec) fell 0.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. It was the first year-on-year fall, although less sharp than what analysts projected (1%).

The seasonally adjusted series increased 0.2% compared to the previous month and fell 0.3% in twelve months. the month recorded one business day less than September 2021.

The issuing institute explained that the Imacec result was explained by “the drop in trade and manufacturing industry, effect partially offset by services”. For its part, the growth of Imacec in seasonally adjusted terms was determined by the performance of services.

Meanwhile, the non-mining Imacec showed a decrease of 0.2% in twelve months, while in seasonally adjusted terms it grew 0.2% compared to the previous month.

In the previous month -August- the indicator did not present variation compared to the same month of the previous year; and it was the lowest performance of the activity since the beginning of last year (February), but “somewhat better” than projected (a contraction of 1% was expected).

In July, meanwhile, the Imacec grew 1.0%, which represented at that time the lowest performance in 17 months. And in June the activity showed its lowest growth since the first part of last year.

The Central Bank detailed that in September 2022 the production of goods grew 0.1%, a result explained “by the performance of the rest of goods activity, in particular due to the increase in the added value of electricity generation”.

By contrast, industry and mining showed decreases of 4.4% and 0.1% respectively.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the production of goods grew by 0.5% compared to the previous month.

The commercial activity presented a decrease of 10.2%result explained by all its components.

For its part, the fall in sales of machinery and equipment, food and beverages explained the result of wholesale trade.

The seasonally adjusted figures showed an increase of 0.8% compared to the previous month.

Services

Finally, the Bank indicated that services grew by 2.9%, a result explained by the performance of personal services, in particular education. He also highlighted the contribution of transportation.

According to figures adjusted for seasonality, service activities showed a growth of 0.4% compared to the previous month. “This result was affected by cultural and leisure activities”said the issuing institute.
