The Education and Health Departments of the Basque Government have been forced to review the lists of teachers that some centers had sent to vaccinate their staff under 55 years of age against COVID-19 with doses of AstraZeneca. In Vitoria, cases had been detected of centers that had tried to immunize more teachers than those summoned at this beginning of the teaching campaign, basically the personnel who work with students who do not wear a mask at all times, that is, Infant and Child teachers. of special education and canteen monitors.
One of these schools that tried to border the protocol is the Mercedarias religious concerted school, located in the Zaramaga neighborhood of Vitoria. The coordinated action of Education and Health has made it possible to refine this list. “Only those who correspond will be vaccinated,” the sources consulted in both departments have emphasized. In the case of private educational centers, it is the Basque Health Service (Osakidetza) itself that supplies the vaccines. In public schools, on the contrary, it is done by previously trained personnel from the Mutualia entity.
The most recent report on the evolution of the vaccination campaign in the Basque Country shows that 7.6% of the target population pending vaccination in Education already has a dose. The first were inoculated last Friday. The campaign will last long due to the characteristics of AstraZeneca, which requires a second dose at ten or twelve weeks. For the moment, professionals over 55 years of age have been excluded, since this type of serum is not yet recommended for those age ranges, to which Pfizer or Moderna vials are intended.
