Unopened Christmas gifts: the key to this find in Coquimbo

The same niece assured that, last December, she went to the old man’s house to give him his Christmas gifts. Since she didn’t find it, she left them there.

After returning to the house after several months, and seeing from the window that the gifts were kept intactthe woman became concerned and started the chain of events that led to finding the remains.

In this case, the regional director of the National Service for the Elderly (Senama), Eduardo Lara, insisted on the need for society to remain alert and vigilant against older adults who live alone.

“Sometimes in older people the deterioration can come very abruptly, for example, due to a home accident such as a fall or for some health reason,” he warned.

“In this sense, it should be taken into account that any person over 70 years of age will always suffer some physical deterioration as a result of it, because their bodies are no longer in a position to withstand strong impacts,” he added.

According to Lara, cases of abandonment or violation of the rights of older people “are not rare.”

“For example, the issue of abuse of the elderly is recurrent at the regional and national levels. And that is a tremendous debt that we owe as a society to older people,” she assured.

And the vulnerability of this age group is clear in the official numbers: In the Province of Elqui alone there are 91,542 adults over 60 years of age, 55,043 of whom are people who are located in the sections of maximum vulnerability.
