Emperor of Japan will attend opening ceremony

The Emperor of Japan, Naruhito, will attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday July 23, the Imperial Household Agency announced on Tuesday July 20, when a controversy erupted at the end of June over concerns loaned to the emperor because of the Covid-19. Empress Masako will not be present at the ceremony, which will be held without the participation of the public – like almost all competitions at the Olympics – and only in the presence of a few hundred Japanese and foreign personalities, such as the president.
