The average price to be paid on Tuesday for electricity to be delivered on Wednesday reached 611.97 euros per MWh. This amount pulverizes the brand new record of 561.94 euros set on Sunday. The previous record was set on August 17 at 541 euros.
The explosive prices of natural gas, the failure of several French nuclear power plants and low water levels are driving up the price of electricity. Added to this is the lack of wind in continental Europe and temperatures that will again reach 30 degrees in the coming days, causing air conditioners and other energy-intensive fans to turn on.
Prices at historically high levels for electricity and natural gas are also reflected in household bills.
