Algeria, the last country to use leaded gasoline, ran out of lead last July.

The United Nations Environment Program has announced that no country in the world now uses leaded gasoline to power cars and trucks.

This toxic fuel has polluted the air, soil and water for nearly a century.

It can cause heart disease, cancer, and stroke, and has been linked to problems with brain development in children.

Most of the rich countries had banned this fuel by the eighties of the last century, but it did not run out of Algeria – the last country to continue to use leaded gasoline – until last July.
