Epic Games buys Harmonix for its metaverse! | Xbox one

Video game buybacks are not going to end anytime soon! Epic Games has just announced the acquisition of the Harmonix studio, recognized for having developed the Rock Band license.

Will virtual concerts be the norm tomorrow?

Today, we are delighted to welcome Harmonix to Epic Games. Harmonix is one of the world’s leading independent game development studios, best known for creating the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises.

Harmonix has a reputation for creating fun and engaging musical experiences designed for everyone to enjoy. As we work to build the metaverse, this expertise is needed to reimagine the way music is experienced, created and distributed.

Last year, Epic Games announced a billion dollar fundraiser to help create its Metaverse, a virtual world connecting many diverse and varied experiences. Among the investors was also Sony.

We learn that the Harmonix team will work closely with Epic to develop musical experiences related to gameplay for Fortnite while continuing to support existing titles, including Rock Band 4. “Together, we will push the creative limits of what is possible and invent new ways for our players to create, play and share music”, said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and president of Harmonix.

Without giving further details, Alain Tascan, vice-president of game development at Epic Games, nevertheless specifies that Harmonix will make it possible to “Transforming the way players experience music, moving from passive listeners to active participants”. How active will players be? Could we launch our own concerts tomorrow in Fortnite or in the Epic Games metaverse? Are we going to buy virtual concert tickets like we would in the big local city? Response in the coming months.
