Erika Vlieghe expresses her concerns about the Euro: “All of this can generate a giant cluster and create a rebound in the weeks to come”

Full stadiums, supporters travel, no mask wearing: the organization of the Euro is not to the liking of Erika Vlieghe, president of GEMS.

It is a subject that worries more and more experts. Several host cities of Euro 2020 are facing an upsurge in Covid-19 cases. This was the case for Russia, and more particularly for Saint Petersburg, which is due to host several matches in the competition. Last Monday, it was Finland’s turn to face Belgium at Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg.

A match that will not have been without consequences on the health plan. Indeed, more than 300 Finnish supporters were infected during the match against our Red Devils. A cluster therefore seems to have affected the Finland – Belgium match in Saint Petersburg. And worse still, other cases should still be detected since around 800 people, and in particular buses of supporters, crossed the border without being tested. According to health authorities, the incidence in St. Petersburg is currently twenty times higher than in Finland. Therefore, should we fear a rebound in the epidemic because of the Euro in the coming weeks?
