Last week, the EU Commission presented legislative packages intended to make Europe more competitive with the USA and China. However, the dispute over the planned end for new combustion cars from 2035 could be on the agenda.
The summit begins with a joint working session with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as Council President Charles Michel announced in his letter of invitation. It deals with major geopolitical issues and global challenges, including the war in Ukraine.
The dispute over whether only e-cars will be registered from 2035 or, as demanded by Germany, also combustion engines powered by e-fuels, should also become an issue.
It is unclear whether there will be a showdown at the EU summit this week. According to Austria, there should not be an agreement between the EU Commission and Germany by then. Berlin, on the other hand, is more confident and expects a solution before the meeting.
