The Portugal team, the France team and now the German team! Out of the “group of death”, Group F, the three teams, yet among the favorites of this Euro 2021, fell from the knockout stages of the competition.
Respectively beaten by Belgium on Sunday (1-0), Switzerland (3-3, 5-4 after tab) on Monday, and now England at Wembley on Tuesday (2-0), Portugal, France and Belgium leave the competition in their first knockout encounter.
The last two world champions and the title holder
The Blues had secured the first place in this group F, falling on an opponent logically less successful in this competition. But the Swiss managed to overthrow the France team at the end of the second half, to finally win on penalties.
Germany, 2nd, expected a complicated fight against England in their den at Wembley. Well led by Raheem Sterling, the men of Gareth Southgate knew how to delight their audience.
As for the Portuguese, they could not do anything against a solid team from Belgium. Regardless of the standings, the three teams could not find the keys to win in the round of 16.
It was undoubtedly the most feared group, the most relieved of this Euro 2021 with the last two world champions – France and Germany -, the defending champion – the Portugal of Cristiano Ronaldo -, and an attractive team from Hungary, well supported and galvanized by its public in Budapest.
Until the end of the third day, the four teams stood in a pocket handkerchief, in turn qualified or eliminated from the competition during the last two matches (France-Portugal and Hungary-Germany).
