Europe charts: Switch the most successful console in April 2022

According to surveys by market researchers from GSD, the Switch secured the title of Europe’s best-selling console last month. However, it should be noted that the German and British markets are not included in the surveys.

At the start of the new week, the market researchers at GSD published various interesting statistics on the European sales month of April 2022.

It is said that Nintendo’s Switch secured the title of the best-selling console in Europe for the seventh time in a row last month. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, celebrated its most successful month ever in Europe, but despite everything, it did not succeed in displacing the switch from the top. The Xbox Series X/S took third place in April 2022.

A total of 289,000 consoles were sold in Europe in April 2022. According to the GSD, this corresponds to a minus of 15 percent compared to March 2022.

Not all markets have been considered

However, it should be borne in mind that the statistics collected by GSD are only meaningful to a limited extent. As was the case in previous months, Germany and Great Britain were not included in the surveys. And here we are dealing with the two largest video game markets in Europe. To make matters worse, the PS5 in Great Britain was provided with various subsequent deliveries in April 2022.

These led to a 59 percent increase in UK sales of the PlayStation 5 compared to the month of March 2022. As Sony announced in its recently released report for fiscal year 2021/2022, which ended on March 31, 2022, the PlayStation 5 shipped 11.5 million units in the last fiscal year, significantly missing internal expectations of 14.8 million units.

A development that Sony attributed, among other things, to the global shortage of semiconductors and chips. For the current 2022/2023 financial year, the company expects demand to increase and around 18 million PS5 consoles to be delivered.
