An impressive rookie like Oscar Piastri is the exception that proves the rule in Formula 1, according to former F1 driver Gerhard Berger.

With the young Australian on the podium in Qatar alongside teammate Lando Norris on Sunday, following his victory in the Sprint, the McLaren F1 driver continues to confirm that he is a star of the future.

But the driver who stands out is clearly the new three-time world champion Max Verstappen.

“It’s fascinating and sensational to see how this guy finishes so many races in the lead – without a single mistake,” enthused Berger.

“He’s also an incredibly nice guy. I’ve seen very few drivers like him – he always gives an answer, always patient and kind. Max is a good guy through and through.”

However, Berger says an impressive new generation is already breaking through – and one of them, Piastri, is in his very first season on the grid and is only 22 years old.

“We used to say all the time that you had to drive in Formula 1 for two or three years to get used to everything.”

“Sorry, but that’s just bullshit! Get in your F1 and drive. Max Verstappen was immediately fast, Lando Norris was immediately fast, and now it’s Piastri.”

“They are exceptional talents. Piastri is the new exception that proves the rule.”

Berger also sees a fascinating situation at Mercedes, with George Russell pushing Lewis Hamilton very hard – culminating in a first-corner crash last Sunday.

“I was surprised that some TV channels were confused about it. It was quite clear who was to blame. Russell is gaining momentum at Mercedes, his comeback has been worthy of what Verstappen can do at Red Bull. “

“What I liked was that Hamilton immediately apologized. To be able to stand up after a situation like that and take responsibility is impressive.”
