Exercises and recommendations at home after overcoming covid-19


The physical exercise is an ally in the prevention of complications in recovered covid-19 patients, the new coronavirus pneumonia and caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which began in the city of Wuhan, China, which has become a public health event that extends to more than 215 countries in the world.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified covid-19 as a pandemic, since the spectrum of severity of the disease varies from an asymptomatic infection, a mild upper respiratory tract disease or a severe viral pneumonia with respiratory failure and / or death.

In different studies, the need to use physiotherapy has been detected in order to return patients to their daily activities, this process can take weeks or months.

Physical therapy can lessen harmful pulmonary and respiratory complications.

It will also play a key role during the acute stage of the disease, becoming the cornerstone of the interdisciplinary health team, for the recovery of the consequences that this disease may leave.

Physiotherapy care must be carried out based on an individualized and personalized evaluation for each patient.

The evaluation and monitoring will be carried out from the beginning of care until the recovery / stabilization of functional and pulmonary sequelae.

Currently our country presents 972,785 confirmed cases, of which 721,076 are recovered patients, most of which do not have adequate information for their full recovery.

These patients require rehabilitation and physical therapy to recover from the effects of the disease and the ventilation and oxygenation support received, as well as prolonged immobilization and bed rest.

Consequently, the Secretary of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Institute of Sports, in coordination with the Secretary of Health of Mexico City and the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, have produced a physical exercise guide recovery for patients who have suffered covid-19.

With the support of the INDEPORTE deputy director of Medicine, Dr. Leslie Carbajal, as well as the physiotherapists Paulo Espinosa and Marcela Vázquez, four video routines were performed:

Breathing exercise guide

Bed exercise guide

Chair exercise guide

Standing exercise guide

These exercises aim to:

-Improve respiratory patterns, dyspnea and chest pain.

-Mobilize and help in the expectoration of secretions.

-Improve strength, endurance and tolerance to physical exercise.

-Prevent and reduce psychological disorders: anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.

-Reduce the risk of infection by other pathogens.

-Improve Life Quality.

Likewise, medical advice is important and not perform these routines if symptoms of fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, leg swelling, among other discomforts occur.

Any recovery therapy should be consulted with a physician for the approval and safety of the patient himself.

This pandemic shows that the reaction speed of the Health System can change from one moment to another and that we are not sufficiently prepared to deal with the magnitude of the problem. It is necessary to create new models of post-help care for covid-19, they highlighted.
