The musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac is hosting a traveling exhibition designed under the aegis of the National Museum of Australia. It is called Songlines and it is entirely designed by Aboriginal artists’ cooperatives. An initiatory journey on the trail of the Seven Sisters, one of the founding legends of the Aboriginal world.

Cognitive and sensory experience that this exhibition dedicated to Aboriginal art. Work by work, the visitor follows the journey of the Seven Sisters, girls followed by a cruel and lustful wizard. More than an aboriginal legend, it is a story of survival, characteristic of this indigenous people of Oceania. “It’s a story of female solidarity, female resilience, violence against women and resilience. These are stories that convey knowledge, in particular knowledge that allows societies to live in community and to prosper. One of the great lesson of the story of the Seven Sisters is the relationship between genders, the relationships that are dysfunctional as opposed to the relationships that are the right way to do things between genders”explains Stéphanie Leclerc Caffarel, scientific referent of the exhibition.

Characters straight out of the Marvel universe.

Polymorphic knowledge materialized in different paintings. Even the youngest are amazed by the beauty of these creations. “There are very lively colors, and very flashy, it catches the eye and I like it”said young Lies, a visitor.

The exhibition is built in close collaboration with Aboriginal communities. But the masterpiece is undoubtedly a large multicolored canvas, a veritable aerial map of the Australian deserts. “There is no real preliminary composition, each artist sets up and paints what he has the right to represent, what he knows. It is all this collective work that creates the extraordinary image”further details Stéphanie Leclerc Caffarel.
