ExxonMobil “Inspired by Honda F1’s passion for 2021 engine development”[F1-Gate .com]

Red Bull F1 fuel partner ExxonMobil praised Honda F1’s “incredible” passion for contributing to Max Verstappen’s first F1 World Champion in 2021.

Honda announced in October 2020 that it will withdraw from F1 with the 2021 season. It evoked an ambitious effort to accelerate the development of F1 engines in 2022 to give Red Bull F1 the best chance to close the gap with Mercedes F1.

ExxonMobil, a fuel and lubricant supplier, played a key role in this process, allowing Honda F1 to pack a year and a half project into a six-month period.

ExxonMobil’s Global Motorsports Technology Manager Tomek Young said in an interview with RacingNews365.com that he looked back on his development efforts and was amazed by the efforts of Honda F1.

“It’s still thrilling to think about those moments we worked with,” said Tomek Young.

“We had multiple engagements a week and were always looking at the data together from early morning to late night. It was a very exciting time.”

“Honda is a great partner. We started working with them (at McLaren) in 2015. After that, Honda entered AlphaTauri and Red Bull. It was a journey for our company, Red Bull and Honda.”

“Along this journey, they have worked with the greatest passion. They just tried to catch up, and were inspired by the passion they saw.”

Tomek Young touched on the range of overhaul of Honda’s F1 engine for the 2021 season and said it was an almost complete redesign.

“In 2021, Honda decided to redesign the engine. The engine didn’t start from scratch, but it was close to it. In fact, it was a start over,” Tomek Young said.

“They looked at engine size, camshaft placement, component weight, and internal shape. There were many changes.”

Regarding the role of ExxonMobil, Tomek Young commented, “We have created these oil and fuel candidates to see what works with this new design.”

“But Honda put everything they had into the 2021 power unit.”
