Facebook’s watch is said to have three photo sensors designed for virtual reality

We know more about the Meta Watch thanks to patents discovered by the LetsGoDigital site. In addition to its removable screen, it would be equipped with several cameras for virtual, augmented or mixed reality.

Meta Watch: Facebook's watch is said to have three photo sensors designed for virtual reality

After connected screens Portal and virtual reality headsets Oculus, the Meta group could go further in the design of devices. Last October, the agency Bloomberg gave us a glimpse of a connected watch developed for the group behind Facebook. This time it’s the turn of the Dutch site LetsGoDigital to provide more information on this Meta Watch project.

As usual, it is thanks to various patents that the Dutch site was able to get an idea of what the Meta Watch, the manufacturer’s first connected watch, would look like. This would primarily target use within the framework of the metaverse, whether in virtual reality or augmented reality.

Thus, it would not benefit from the classic functions expected of a smartwatch, such as the heart rate sensor, the display of notifications or the counter of the number of steps taken. No, the Meta Watch would in fact benefit from a particularly original design, with a removable screen that could come out of the watch case as revealed by a first patent.

A watch equipped with several cameras

In addition, as Bloomberg already indicated last October thanks to an illustration, Meta’s watch would be equipped with at least one camera integrated into the screen thanks to a small notch. According to the information accumulated by LetsGoDigital, however, it would not be a notch, but a punch. In addition to this main photo sensor, Meta is said to have planned to integrate two other cameras, an ultra-wide-angle module and a module with telephoto or fisheye optics.

“Facebook’s watch would be offered with a second screen, also with multiple cameras – with different types of lenses. The second display would have the same format as the first. The user can easily remove the screen from its frame. The case then remains on the user’s wrist with the bracelet. The screen can be changed, but also used for virtual, mixed or augmented reality ”, says LetsGoDigital.

It is precisely on this point that Meta’s watch could stand out from its competitors. According to the Dutch site, the objective of this watch would not be so much to offer health data as to serve as part of virtual reality, with Oculus, or augmented reality, with the famous Cambria project. “The interest of integrating several cameras is essentially for the possibilities offered within the framework of virtual reality, augmented or mixed”, LetsGoDigital analysis. In fact, in this context, the sensors of the watch could make it possible to easily locate the user in space. In addition, removable screens could also serve as a screen as part of a virtual reality headset.

Obviously, it is for the moment only Meta patent and nothing indicates that these projects will one day materialize. These analyzes should therefore be taken with a grain of salt. However, the fact that Bloomberg has already expressed Meta’s ambitions in the field of connected watches tends to show that this is not just a desire, but a product in development at the Menlo giant. Park.
