Fact check: Can you eat sugar with diabetes? – Economy & Volkswagen – News

Baierbrunn (ots) – “You eat sugar? You’re not allowed to do that!” One of many annoying comments that people with diabetes often have to hear. But what is the truth of this warning? The pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Ratgeber” does the fact check.

Sugary drinks are particularly unfavorable

Up until the 1980s, people with diabetes said: stay away from sugar. “This sugar ban is basically off the table,” says nutritionist Dr. Astrid Tombek from the Diabetes Center Mergentheim. “A piece of cake or something like that every now and then is okay even with diabetes.” Of course, you have to calculate the amount of insulin you need during therapy. Basically, too much sugar or simple carbohydrates such as in white bread are unhealthy for everyone.

If you eat sweets often, you always have too much insulin in your blood. This promotes fat build-up and makes you fat. “A lot of sugar promotes type 2 diabetes and other diseases,” warns Astrid Tombek. “Sugary drinks are particularly unfavorable. They cause blood sugar and insulin levels to rise quickly – even in healthy people.” Sugar is hidden in many finished products. A look at the nutritional table reveals this.

Conclusion: The statement that people with diabetes should generally not eat sugar is not correct. “But only enjoy sweets from time to time,” advises nutritionist Tombek. “Eat as little sugar as possible. Because it’s simply unhealthy. For everyone.”
