As the professor of family psychology in the magazine “Emotion” (issue 12/2015), it is not so much about what has been said. A positive, emotional family climate is crucial – this is the greatest protective factor for child development.
“In a loving, accepting, appreciative atmosphere, I learn to” mentalize “much better,” says the expert. That means better understanding your own feelings and those of others and being able to regulate your own better. “Then I can deal with anger, overcome fear, understand shame or envy etc. instead of being helplessly at their mercy.” (dpa)
