Meloni government restricts LGBT rights
Parents of the same sex may no longer both be officially registered in Italy. The Minister for Family Affairs also speaks out in drastic terms against surrogacy.
Eugenia Roccella knew no mercy. Again and again the Italian politician insisted on what she considered right for the well-being of the children: orderly family relationships with father and mother, and prefer fewer than more rights for homosexual couples. Roccella is in the government of Giorgia Meloni the Minister for Family, Births and Equal Opportunities. But the latter should come to an end when it comes to children in homosexual partnerships. Two women or two men can no longer register as parents of newborns as easily as before.
Above all, however, surrogacy aroused the minister’s stumbling blocks. There is “a market for children” here, she fumed, which involves tens of thousands of euros. “This is the enslavement of the female body.” Things got so intense that the TV presenter slipped out a swear word at the end – for which she immediately apologized.
Derailment of the Fratelli d’Italia
Recently, ministers in the Meloni government had made extremely controversial remarks, such as the Interior Minister with disrespectful words about the victims of the Boat disaster in the Mediterranean. Government politicians jumped to her side so that nobody would think that the family minister was traveling alone this time. Federico Mollicone, President of the Culture Commission in the Italian House of Representatives, completely derailed, who spoke of a “serious crime” in connection with surrogacy, “worse than pedophilia”. Both politicians are members of Melonis Fratelli d’Italia.
For some observers, it had recently looked as if Meloni was governing according to the principle: the officials are rumbling, but the prime minister is reliably keeping up with the European convoy. In terms of economic policy, she remained on the course of her highly respected, non-partisan predecessor Mario Draghi, and she also stands firmly on the side of Ukraine in foreign policy, which is quite controversial in her coalition. But when it comes to the core of the image of man, Meloni continues to take a stand against “gender ideology” and “LGBT lobby”, be it through a demonstrative image with a child and partner on Father’s Day.
Rainbow families are suspicious of Meloni
A political position is consolidated, and those who are attacked have a keen sense of it. Thousands demonstrated under rainbow flags in Milan over the weekend that parental relationships in homosexual partnerships can continue to be recognized by a simple administrative act. The government is suspicious of all this and considers surrogacy in particular to be a product of evil.
The rule in the EU is that these, even if they are prohibited nationally, can be recognized if they have been carried out abroad. The government majority in the Italian parliament has now voted against the implementation of a corresponding EU regulation, thereby siding with the Visegrad states led by Hungary and Poland on a symbolically important issue – and against the majority opinion in the EU. The Meloni government feels good about it, but its opponents are alarmed.
