A man had a fatal fall this Wednesday afternoon from the top of the cathedral. He died instantly.
A terrible accident occurred, this Wednesday shortly before 4 p.m., in the emblematic monument of the City of Tournai. A man fell from one of the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral. His body was found on the roof of the Saint-Louis chapel, near the Place du Vieux Marché aux Poteries.
The emergency services intervened on the spot, but could only note the death of the man from Templeuve.
The first testimonies show a fall of 15 to 20 meters. The victim reportedly lost his balance while filming. She had been able to enter the interior of the religious building in the company of an acquaintance who had the keys.
No authorization had been granted by province of Hainaut, owner of the building, for this visit. “The province gives authorizations, in an exceptional way, under very specific conditions and witha strict framework in terms of safety, insists Serge Hustache, president of the provincial college. Very many people would like to be able to discover the cathedral from the inside and from above, we very regularly have requests but we refuse such “tourist” visits… We cannot go up in the cathedral as we do at the Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately, this drama is proof that it is dangerous and that the risk of falling is indeed present… ”
On the side of the police, we refuse to comment, pending the communication of the parquet floor of Tournai, this Thursday.
To the family of the victim, our newspaper sends its condolences.
