Another St. Paulian alongside Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, who has already qualified with Ghana, can dream of taking part in the World Cup in Qatar (21/11 to 18/12). Jackson Irvine (29) won the Asian play-off with Australia against the United Arab Emirates 2-1 and now plays against South America fifth-placed Peru for the coveted World Cup ticket on Saturday.
Irvine played a significant role in the Soccereroes’ victory. In the 53rd minute, Martin Boyle made a decisive move down the right flank, delivered a perfect assist from the baseline – and the St. Pauli kicker pushed in the middle to make it 1-0.
However, Irvine was also involved in the Emirates’ quick equalizer – and twice over. In midfield, Irvine headed an opponent. In the following counter-attack, the Kiez-Kicker hit an air hole with a cross – and the Brazilian Caio Canedo, who was naturalized by the Emirates, made it 1-1 (57th).
In the end, however, the well-deserved happy ending for the “Socceroos”. After a corner, Frankfurt’s Ajdin Hrustic deflected the shot and made it 2-1 (84′). The Australians took the first play-off step towards the World Cup – also thanks to their fighter from FC St. Pauli.
