FC St. Pauli: World Cup out! Jackson Irvine proudly goes on vacation | Sports

Jackson Irvine (29) was clearly disappointed after the final whistle. With difficulty he fought against tears in his eyes. The desert World Cup in Qatar is over for the FC St. Pauli midfielder.

Australia lost 2-1 to Argentina, missing out on the quarter-finals. This would still have taken place without Irvine if we had progressed. The Kiez-Kicker captain saw his second yellow card of the tournament early on and would have been suspended.

“Losing is always difficult,” admitted Irvine on the ARD microphone. “We really fought, believed in ourselves and stayed compact. We had a lot of good chances. You saw that at the end. We can really praise and be proud of each other.”

His World Cup conclusion: “I hope that we gave people a little joy and that we advanced football a bit for the new generation.”

Irvine also represented the Pauli colors more than worthy. Sports director Andreas Bornemann (51): “Jackson also showed the qualities he has at the World Cup against top international teams and against world-class players like Lionel Messi.”

Pauli will receive around 200,000 euros as compensation for the World Cup. Irvine is now on vacation. After Christmas, he joins coach Timo Schultz (45) for training on December 27th.

Then it’s back to everyday life – second division relegation battle instead of World Cup holidays…
