Several passengers from aferry in which at least three cases of coronavirus were detectedon board havejumped into the water this Wednesday when he couldn’t dockin a port on the island of Flores, in Indonesia, as reported by the country’s authorities.
The incident came after the ferry crew asked for permission to dock in the port of Maumere on Tuesday, an issue that wasdenied due to measures imposedto stop the spread of the pandemic.
The head of the rescue team at the local level, Putu Sudayana, has confirmed that the passengers on board the boat -which was covering the route between Borneo and Celebes-They put on a life vest and jumped off the rail.
After about 20 hours of intense negotiations between the ship’s captain and the authorities of Sikka province,the 233 passengers who were on board have managed to disembark, but only because they have agreed to undergo a period of confinement in various facilities, according to information from the Asia News agency.
On the other hand, in the capital of the country, Jakarta, the Government has imposed apartial closure following the governor’s request, Anies Baswedan, in order to combat the virus. All those who violate the quarantine measures will be brought to justice.
Baswedan has criticized the Ministry of Health for acting in a “very bureaucratic” way in dealing with the virus, which has left only 106 people dead and 1,369 confirmed cases in Jakarta, as the newspaper ‘The Jakarta Post’ has pointed out.
Across Indonesia, there are already 240 deaths from the coronavirus, while the number of those infected is around 3,000, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
