Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) on Thursday welcomed the announcement by Belfius and Keytrade to raise their savings rates and immediately urged other banks to follow their example.
“This is only a first step. The movement must continue”, judged the minister, questioned in the House during the session of current affairs.
If the other banks do not in turn announce a rise in their rates, the government will take measures, repeated Mr. Van Peteghem, questioned by several deputies.
The Minister of Finance recalled having asked his colleague in charge of the Economy, Pierre-Yves Dermagne (PS), to open an investigation into the functioning of the savings account market in Belgium.
Questioned in the wake of the Minister, the Secretary of State in charge of Consumers, Alexia Bertrand (Open Vld), however specified that, on the basis of the recent opinion submitted by the National Bank, the measures that the government could be led to take will not be uniform given the differences between the banks active on the Belgian market.
