It is the biggest tragedy since 1990 in terms of the number of deaths from fires in the Czech Republic. A fire in an apartment in a thirteen-storey panel house in Bohumín killed eleven people, including three children.
The tragedy took place during Saturday afternoon, so what do we really know about it now?
Six people burned right in an apartment on the 11th floor of a panel house. Amateur shots taken from several places around the house clearly show that no one who stayed in the apartment had a chance to survive. And they also largely explain why the other five people chose a certain death by jumping from the balcony of a high-rise building. As firefighters later said, they took a few minutes to arrive at the site with a sail that would mitigate the effects of the fall and give at least a theoretical chance of surviving a fall from a height.
In residential fires, one room is usually affected, but in this case it burned across all rooms, which are completely devastated by the fire.
Why it burned
The Minister of the Interior, Jan Hamáček, published the first findings of the accident investigators. Apparently it was a neighborhood dispute. Police detained one man. The media speculate that it was he who poured the flammable substance over the door of the apartment and thus prevented the inhabitants of the apartment on the 11th floor from escaping from the fire. “We will know more when the interrogation takes place. The way he spoke aroused suspicion in the police, “Hamáček added. The fact that it was an arson attack was also confirmed directly by the Moravian-Silesian Governor Ivo Vondrák (YES) at the site of the tragedy.
The fire has not only casualties but also injuries. Among them are two firefighters and a police officer. Ladislav Lang, a spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian rescuers, said that ten people were transported to hospitals – four to the burn center at the Ostrava University Hospital, three to the Ostrava Municipal Hospital, two to the Karviná-Ráj Hospital and one to Havířov. According to Lang, two patients had severe burns, all others had mild burns, or were transported with intoxication.
The Moravian-Silesian Police Director, Tomáš Kužel, confirmed that the police had detained one man. The fire in Bohumín is extraordinary from the national point of view, experts agree. A special investigation team from Prague headed to Bohumín. “We need to identify the victims. The bodies are relatively devastated.
The most tragic since 1990
The fire in the prefabricated house in Bohumín with 11 victims is the most tragic since 1990.
The fire was claimed by 9 victims in October 2010, when they died in Florence near Prague nine homeless people.
8 victims died this year in a burning dfor the disabled in Vejprty in the Chomutov region.
In May 1995, a fire in Prague had 8 victims hotel Olympik.
I can reassure the public that there is no offender moving around who is able to do something like this again. I think we are well towards the perpetrator, “said Cone. So far, he did not want to specify whether the perpetrator was one or more.
Did the firefighters arrive late?
According to the available data, the tragedy of this magnitude could not have been prevented by firefighters. They received information that it was burning in a block of flats at 5:49 p.m. The first unit arrived at the fire place five minutes later. It took tens of seconds for the fire department to spread the jump mattress because of the people jumping out of the windows.
