Flushing Meadows: Halep, Morugusa and Rublev cross the first round

Romanian Simona Halep continued her quest to regain her balance after recently recovering from injury, to reach the second round of the US Open, the fourth Grand Slam, at the expense of Italian Camila Gheorghi 6-4, 7-6, (7-3) on Monday on the first day competitions.

With this victory, the defending champion of two major tournaments, French Open 2018 and Wimbledon 2019, set a date with Slovakian Kristina Kokova, who defeated American Anne Lee 7-5, 6-1.

And Kat Halep (29 years) recently suffered a right thigh injury during her participation in the Cincinnati American Championships, but she made a promising start in New York, where she aspires to her first title in Flushing Meadows.

Halep expressed her happiness with the win, saying, “The first round is always a tough test, so of course I’m happy. I’m pleased with my better serve.”

“There is a feeling of energy, a feeling of life on the field. I hope that continues.”

On the other hand, Spain’s Garbine Mugurosa, ranked ninth in the world, qualified for the next round by defeating Croatian Donna Vekic in a difficult match 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5).

Also, American Sloane Stephens defeated her compatriot Madison Keys 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7), and the other American Daniel Collins beat Spain’s Carla Soares Navarro 6-2 6-4, and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova over Italy’s Sarah Erani 6-3 and 6-2.

Egyptian Mayar Sherif was eliminated from the tournament in the first round, losing to Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

In men’s, the Russian Andrei Rublev, ranked seventh in the world, started his career by defeating the 42-year-old Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-6 (3/7), 6-3 in a match that lasted 96 minutes.

Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassim also passed the obstacle of Russian Evgeny Donskoy with great difficulty and beat him 7-6 (0/7), 3-6, 7-6 (1/7) and 7-6 (8/10).
