Was Ramos trying to steal the Ballon d’Or?
To ensure that a Spaniard finally wins the Ballon d’Or again, Sergio Ramos (35) relied on vitamin B. The defender wanted to cheat his way to the award with the help of the Spanish association president.
It’s difficult for defenders to win the Ballon d’Or. Because what are they measured against? Games without conceding a goal are more likely to be at the top of the goalies’ statistics, while strikers have goal quotas. So Sergio Ramos (36) felt compelled to help out.
The Spaniard, then still in the service of Real Madrid, considered 2020 to be his best year. In order to increase his chances of winning the world footballer award, the national player turned to the Spanish association president Luis Rubiales (44). The Spanish newspaper “El Confidencial” has now published the alleged chat history.
Rubiales is said to let contacts prevail
Ramos wrote: “You know I’ve never asked you for anything. I’m doing it today because I think I’ve had a special year. I want you to help me in any way you can and use your Ballon d’Or contacts.” Hard to believe that a world and European champion and multiple Champions League winner had to resort to such means.
He would be infinitely grateful to Rubiales, not only for himself but also because “Spanish football deserves it”. The PSG defender is arguably addressing the fact that no Spaniard has won the award since Barça and Inter legend Luis Suarez (87) back in 1960, when there was the Ballon d’Or for European Footballer of the Year.
“Count on me”
Rubiales’ response: «I think it’s a good year for you to win the trophy. Of course, the Ballon d’Or is not up to me, but as far as I can help, count on me.” Incidentally, this is not the first time that the president of the association has made the headlines due to dubious news. In connection with the Saudi deal for the Spanish Supercup, dubious news with Gerard Piqué (35) was revealed in April.
But back to Ramos. He responded to the offered help with an invitation to dinner: “I know it’s not up to you, but relationships are key. Anyway, I’m counting on your help,” Ramos told Rubiales.
