DxOMark was able to test the photo and video module of the iPhone 12 and if the French laboratory welcomes the performance of the device, it deplores certain shortcomings in the face of the competition.
Indeed, the French laboratory tested this Friday the basic version of the last iPhone, and gave it the score of 122. What place it in 13th position, behind the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, the Honor 30 Pro or theiPhone 11 Pro Max. As a reminder, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max had respectively received the score of 128 and 130, placing them in fifth and fourth position in the ranking.
Concerns in low light and for portrait mode
In detail, a score of 132 is reached for the photo part and 112 for the video part. If DxOMark particularly welcomes the speed of the autofocus of the smartphone, its good management of exposure, colors or textures, it is in low light that the smartphone catches the most. “The noise is more present than we would have liked, the simulated bokeh of the portrait mode is disappointing and the lack of telephoto lens really hinders the zoom”, deplores the French laboratory. In fact, under most conditions the iPhone 12 does as well as the iPhone 12 Pro. Logical, since with the exception of the telephoto lens, the photo modules are identical.
For DxOMark, “There are some competitors who offer similar or better image quality, sometimes at lower prices”. Nevertheless, the laboratory recalls that the iPhone 12 will be more suitable for people who are already used to iOS and who are not absolutely looking to take the best portraits or enjoy the best optical zoom.
