Fernando Alonso revealed to have had an experience “strange” by sharing his first Formula 1 podium in seven years with 2021 title contenders Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
For years, fans hadn’t seen the Spaniard, now 40, appear so gleeful about a race result, with Qatar marking the end of a long streak of Grand Prix without a podium.
But he admitted: “It was a strange podium for me. I wasn’t sure what to do.”
“These two riders are in this war and there was me, I didn’t want to stand out too much,” smiles the Alpine rider.
Alonso also clarified that while happy with his 98th career podium, he doesn’t compare it to many of his past top 3 appearances.
“I’m not going to tell you that it was a podium comparable to some others that I had in terms of importance. I’m very happy, but that can’t be compared to the others, especially to the victories. is important, for sure, it marks the continuation of the Alpine F1 project in a good way, but it was actually a little strange. “
