The ciclista professional Freddy Ovett, of Australian and British nationality, installed during the season in Girona, of the team Israel Cycling Academy, could not get the world record for the Everesting event. With the support of the Sports Department of the City of Platja d’Aro it had been proposed to break the records of this modality, which consists of making a bike ride with a cumulative difference in level equivalent to the height of the ‘Everest, 8,484 meters, in the shortest possible time. You have to choose a single mountain and do the same route, going up and down, as many times as necessary to accumulate the ceiling height of the world.
The point chosen on this occasion was the ascent of Mas Nou from Platja d’Aro, between Guineu and Gavarres streets, to surpass the current record of 6 hours 59 minutes and 38 seconds. Well-known cyclist Alberto Contador is in fourth place in this ranking with a time of 7:27:20. When it comes to the truth, though, Freddy Ovett retired early after finding himself unwell. By the time he retired he had completed 60 of the 85 laps on the circuit that had been prepared, the equivalent of 6,200 meters of elevation gain. The runner had until then set a mark of 4 h and 50 minutes, but unfortunately he was not in the best physical condition to complete the challenge.
