According to recent reports, developers and publishers on the PS5 themselves decide whether to offer cross-gen upgrades for free. According to an insider, most third-party studios will probably choose it.
With the PS5 on the one hand and the Xbox Series X on the other, Microsoft and Sony Interactive Entertainment herald the new console generation at the end of the year.
Just as it was the case with the last generation changes, numerous developers and publishers are banking on cross-generation projects. To prevent players from being asked to checkout twice when upgrading to the new generation, Microsoft announced the feature called Smart Delivery. This ensures that players can always download the best version when buying a game – at no additional cost. But how will Sony Interactive Entertainment handle it all?
According to an insider, the developers decide for themselves
While the Japanese company is still silent on this, the insider Tidux wants to know more. As the insider would like to know, those responsible for Sony Interactive Entertainment are aware that cross-generation upgrades are associated with corresponding additional costs for the studios.

For this reason, according to Tidux, Sony Interactive Entertainment should have decided to let developers or publishers decide whether to offer their cross-gen upgrades for free or for a fee. It also says that most third-party partners of Sony Interactive Entertainment will choose to offer their cross-gen upgrades at no additional cost.
However, the information from Tidux has not yet been officially confirmed. Just like the Xbox Series X, the PS5 will find its way onto the shelves of retailers in this year’s Christmas season.
Cross-buy info. it’s up to the developers and publishers. PlayStation understands the extra costs involved in cross gen development and don’t want to back people into a corner with a PR buzz word. So far, most devs / publ will offer a free upgrade to PS5.
