Freeze blueberries: This is how the blueberries stay fresh

Blueberries are in season from June to September inclusive. Whether pure as a fruity snack, in muesli or made into pancakes or muffins – the berries taste best at the main harvest time, but you can also freeze blueberries and use them in autumn and winter.

If you want to freeze blueberries, you should definitely use fresh and unblemished fruit. Ideally, you freeze the freshly bought or picked blueberries directly in.

Here’s how to freeze blueberries:

  1. Prepare blueberries: In a colander, gently wash the blueberries under cool running water. Make sure to only shower her with a gentle stream of water so you don’t damage her skin. Then let the blueberries dry completely on a kitchen towel.
  2. Prefreeze blueberries: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or more sustainable Baking paper substitute and spread the blueberries on top. The individual fruits should not touch each other. Slide the baking sheet into a freezer, where the blueberries can now freeze through individually. This will make it easier to portion the frozen blueberries later.

For Smoothies and for baking you can use the blueberries in their frozen state. You can also dip the frozen fruit in liquid chocolate (tip: make chocolate yourself) which hardens directly on contact with the berries. This is how you get a crunchy, fruity candy.

For other uses, such as as an ingredient for Muesli without sugar or as a topping for homemade porridge, Blueberry pancakes, blue Berry muffins and desserts, you should thaw the frozen blueberries first. Fortunately, blueberries are not prone to a large loss of flavor after freezing and thawing. Therefore, they taste almost like freshly picked. But the consistency could change a little through the process: the blueberries could become a little mushy or get a tougher skin.

However, there are a few tricks you can use to prevent the consistency from changing too much:

  • If you need to defrost quickly, you can proceed as follows: Take the required amount from the freezer, fill it into a small bowl and pour warm water over it. Drain this once it has cooled. Most of the berries should be thawed by now. With this method, the consistency could possibly suffer a bit.
  • The gentler alternative is to let the delicate berries thaw in the refrigerator. Place them on a plate a little apart from each other. Blueberries will lose water as they thaw. The distance between the fruits is therefore important so that the blueberries do not lie in the liquid that escapes from the other berries and become mushy as a result.
