From Doctor to Firefighter: Franco’s Journey of Service and Vocation

The first time Franco approached the firefighters volunteers was thanks to the school. He attended elementary school at 171 and one day his teacher took them to visit Detachment 2 of Kilometer 8, that unit that was only four blocks from his house. For him it was quite an adventure, the beginning of a bond that was going to grow over the years and that was going to lead him to join the ranks of that barracks.

At present, the Detachment 2, it is no longer the place that remembers that boy who also dreamed of being a doctor. The Firefighters Association and its members, with the help of the State, have made the unit grow in infrastructure and every day it grows a little more. Franco and his colleagues live it with pride and commitment, as in every emergency that comes their way on a day-to-day basis.

“We chose this life by vocation”: Comodoro firefighters show their tasks in the framework of June 2

“Being a firefighter is something very nice”admits Franco in dialogue with ADNSUR. “In my case, I grew up very close to the barracks, but honestly I was never a kid who dressed as a firefighter or said ‘I want to be a firefighter.’ Yes, I remember every time the siren sounded and I saw that the truck was close, I ran it and went to see what it was doing because it caught my attention and The first approach I had was in elementary school., when they brought me to see the Detachment. I remember that they showed me an ax and a couple of other things”.

Detachment 2 continues to grow at Kilometer 8.

By then, Franco already dreamed of being a doctor, the trade he discovered on an office visit. “I remember a feeling of everyone waiting for the doctor, very cold, people looking annoyed and when the doctor arrived everything was solved; everyone left happy, happy, we entered without any problem. I remember that he answered and when I came out I told my mom that I wanted to be a doctor. She told me that I had to go somewhere else, far away, that it cost a lot, but she stayed with me”.

Franco is one of the firefighters from Detachment 2 of Kilometer 8.

The young man grew up with that concern, his desire to be a doctor and his closeness to firefighters, something that reappeared from time to time. High school was hard, he admits, while he went through various schools, he played soccer in Petrochemistry, the club of his loves. Those were times of rebellion and football and that idea that always floated up again appeared.

Another blow to the pocket: what will be all the services that will increase in June

I was 16 years old when Franco once again wanted to enter the fire school. He thought about it, searched for information, but gave up for a simple reason: classes were on Saturdays, the same days he played soccer, and he said, ‘no, I’d rather play.’

Finally, at ENET 2, he found the direction he needed to finish high school and follow that career he had dreamed of since he was a child. At that time, Medicine was not studied in Comodoro Rivadavia, and those kids who wanted to do it had to move to another province.

Franco chose Buenos Aires and with his dreams on his back he went to do the CBC at the UBA (University of Buenos Aires). It was an intense year that ended the following summer with his return to Comodoro to see his family. At that time, there was already talk of the possibility of opening the career of Medicine at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco.

June arrives with six new increases: how much it will be and what services it will affect

Franco was enthusiastic about the idea. It had cost him a lot to return to Buenos Aires after the holidays. Thus, the day his mother called him and told him that the Medicine degree was opening in Comodoro, she did not hesitate and asked him to come back.

The young man finally entered the career, without imagining that in those classrooms he would also find the motivation to decide to join volunteer firefighters. “When I entered, just the following year the Regional Fire Department opened, and I had a friend, Diego, the first uni classmate with whom I approached, who had been a firefighter and told me some things. I liked everything he told me, so we decided to sign up and we started ”.

By then the Regional 3the fire school that works in Comodoro Rivadavia and that includes Rada Tilly, Sarmiento and Río Mayo, worked in Ceret, and in the barracks where the practices were carried out.

Franco, between books and classes, finally completed the 9-month course and became a firefighter, since then he has combined the two trades, dreaming of graduating as a doctor, something that could happen in a short time.

The young man only has three subjects left: Pediatrics, Gynecology and Clinic 2. Then will come the Compulsory Final Practice (PFO) and the end of a stage. However, he admits that it has not been easy to combine studies with services, nor to adapt to the barracks.

“It has not been easy. Honestly, at first it was very difficult for me to moderate the topic of times. It happened to me that the first two years I had many emergency exits because of the proximity where I live. So I would hear the siren and leave, and I spent a lot of time here. That made me grow in some way, but it made it difficult for me with the race, until I was able to fix the times and from there we started better. It was also very difficult for me to adjust to the barracks, ”she adds between laughs. “At first it was difficult to live with my colleagues because it was difficult for me to accept orders, but I gradually got used to it and I began to understand the functions and so on.”

The eighth march of Ni Una Menos was held in Comodoro under the motto “Live, free and debt free we love each other”

Franco with his colleagues from the detachment.

Franco likes what he does and also knows that both trades complement each other. He says that he spends as many hours as he can inside the barracks, but when the final times approach he tends to move away, although there is always time to have a mate with the barracks man and keep him company for a few minutes.

Of course, like all his colleagues, he complies with the four shifts per month and the minimum number of hours he must spend in the unit, and he is always ready when an emergency calls, knowing that his double role allows him to have more tools when it comes to to provide pre-hospital service in emergencies, first aid or intervene in a vehicular rescue.

National Volunteer Firefighter Day: Why it is celebrated every June 2

Of course, throughout these years he has had to intervene in different incidents, many of them painful that took the life of someone. “They always touch ugly situations, but i feel ready and I prepare myself for that in the best possible way, training and teaching because when one teaches it, it fixes it and that way I also learn. The important thing here is to be sure of what one does. because if you did what was within your reach, you have to go quietly. Also allow yourself to fail because we are human, but that it is not an error due to lack of preparation or training”.

Thus, Franco continues studying to be able to graduate quickly and fulfill his double role, a vocation of service that is part of his life and what he likes to do: helping others.
