At the command of Eibar, the Derio coach returns nine months later to the rojiblanca factory to take on Amorebieta
Tomorrow’s Amorebieta-Eibar (6.15pm) will be a special match for Gaizka Garitano. Derio’s technician returns to Lezama, his home for many years. He was as a player since his time in the children’s team and also as a coach. He was campaign and a half at the head of the Athletic branch before taking charge of the rojiblanco first team until last January 3.
Now, Garitano has found accommodation in his other house, in Eibar. There he took his first steps as a coach, and this season he has returned to Ipurua to rebuild the gunsmiths project and try to return the Catalans to First.
Gaizka Garitano joined Athletic as a child. At the age of 18, Koldo Agirre gave him the opportunity to make his debut with Bilbao Athletic. It was in April 1994, with the cubs in the Second Division, and soon he became one of the wickers in the center of the field of the subsidiary. From that litter, several coaches would end up emerging who are now trying to transfer their knowledge from the benches: Oskar Vales, Jon Pérez ‘Bolo’, Aitor Karanka … as well as Gaizka Garitano himself.
With the descent of Bilbao Athletic to the disappeared Second B, Derio’s team left on loan to Lleida in search of minutes. On his return to Lezama, he did not explode to the desired level. He came, yes, to debut with the first team. Although it was a short-lived apparition.
Garitano tries to rebuild the gunsmith project to return to the First Division
Luis Fernández gave him a few minutes in a UEFA Cup match against Sampdoria on September 16, 1997. As a player, Gaizka Garitano also defended the colors of Eibar, Ourense, Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alavés in his more than 500 Matches as a professional footballer, the vast majority in the Second Division.
After hanging up his boots, his jump to the benches came almost immediately. He was Ángel Viadero’s assistant at Eibar in the 2009-10 season. The following campaign already took the reins of the armory branch. And in 2012 he made the leap to the first team. They were brilliant years in Ipurua: he achieved two consecutive promotions.
Derio’s coach led Eibar from the Bronze Division to the First Division for the first time in its history. A promotion that will try to repeat this course. On that road he will return tomorrow to the Lezama facilities, which are now also the fiefdom of Amorebieta.
