Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune spoke this Sunday evening on various diplomatic issues, including relations with Morocco but also France.
Within the framework of declarations granted to journalists, Tebboune affirms that Algeria “will not accept any mediation” for the improvement of diplomatic relations with Morocco, “So as not to assimilate the aggressor to the aggressed”, he said. “We no longer need the old gas pipeline that crosses Moroccan soil, but we have not yet taken a decision before the end of the contract, which runs until October 31,” added the Algerian head of state.
However, last August, the Algerian Minister of Energy had assured the Spanish ambassador in Algiers that his country was not interested in extending the supply contract through the Maghreb-Europe (GME) gas pipeline which crosses Morocco. For his part, Rabat had spoken, through the director general of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), Amina Benkhadra, affirming to be in favor of maintaining the gas pipeline.
Regarding the latest diplomatic tensions between the two countries, going as far as the rupture decided by Algiers, Abdelmadjid Tebboune declares: « Whoever seeks us knows where to find us. This is what I say in response to the cooperation between Morocco and the Zionists ”, he launches, allusion made to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv. “We are a people of resistance and we know the value of wars and gunpowder, but we want peace”, slips Tebboune.
The Algerian president also spoke about diplomatic relations with France. The Algiers ambassador had been recalled from Paris, after the statements of French President Emmanuel Macron on the subject of the history of Algeria. A possible return of the Algerian ambassador to France is “Conditional on total respect for the Algerian state”, Tebboune said on Sunday. “History must not be falsified”, he added, continuing: “The State is standing with all its pillars, with its power, the power of its army and its valiant people”.
