Washington: Geeta Gopinath, a Malayalee, is stepping down as Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF said they would return to the Department of Economics at Harvard University in January. She served as the IMF’s chief economist for three years. Geetha Gopinath, based in Kannur, headed the research team that prepares the Global Economic Review report.

Geeta Gopinath, who made history as the first woman to hold the position of Chief Economist, has made an outstanding contribution to accurate assessments during the Kovid epidemic, said IMF Managing Director Crystalina Georgia. Geeta’s influence on the work of the IMF was great. Crystalina said Geeta played a key role in setting international vaccination goals and forming a team to monitor climate change within the IMF.

Geeta took over as Chief Economist in October 2018. Geeta Gopinath, who has been a freelance adviser to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan since July 2016, resigned in 2018 to take charge of the IMF.
