Georges-Louis Bouchez: “Experts must show loyalty to the political decision”

Last week, a certain tension was palpable between experts and politicians. “We must try to calm down, not to overbid,” said Alexander De Croo.

Enbetween 25 and 31 January, nearly 114 people infected with Sars-Cov-2 were admitted on average each day to hospital in Belgium, which represents a decrease of 16% compared to the seven-day period previous ones, according to figures from the daily epidemiological bulletin of the Sciensano Public Health Institute published on Monday.

The average number of coronavirus infections amounted to 2,259 per day over the period from January 22 to 28, up 10% from the previous week.

While the questions on vaccines have taken on a lot of importance in recent days, Georges-Louis Bouchez has spoken on the Belgian strategy. “In terms of phase 2, for people who are neither in a nursing home nor in a hospital, we still do not have a refined strategy”. Belgium’s goal is to vaccinate 70% of the population in the summer of 2021. “The solution is the vaccine,” insists the president of the MR.

Last week, a certain tension was palpable between experts and politicians. “When the experts speak out, they must show loyalty to the political decision,” he thunders. Pinning mainly Marc Van Ranst, Bouchez believes that “if they are paid by the government to advise it, they have a duty of reserve”.

A consultation committee is scheduled for Friday, the reopening of contact professions will be on the table. “The trajectory makes the opening of contact professions on February 13 possible. It will be necessary to show me why we would not make this opening ”. The president of the MR is therefore waiting for a study, but he doubts that the tracing data will allow conclusions to be reached at this level, because they would not exist.
