The big winners of the Golden Globes are Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. In a year of pandemic streaming hits like “The Crown” or “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” dominate – but there are exceptions.
Netflix grabbed four categories that evening with “The Crown”, the top category “Best Film Drama” went to a streaming service from the USA with “Nomadland”: Hulu. And Sacha Baron Cohen won a Golden Globe for Amazon Prime Video. In 2021, due to the pandemic and empty movie theaters, the VoD platforms will outshine the traditional film industry.
The road movie “Nomadland” by director Chloé Zhao created another special feature: Zhao also won the director’s trophy for the film, only as the second woman in the history of the award, which was first given in 1944. In the non-fiction-based film, she tells the story of a 60-year-old woman who, after the death of her husband, kept herself afloat with precarious jobs and as a modern nomad in a trailer through the United States.

In the comedy category, the vicious society satire “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (German: Borat connection movie film) won with the British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who also received the Globe for best leading actor in a comedy. As in 2006, the Briton had traveled through the USA, got into conversation with people and involved them in sometimes funny or revealing situations. His first “Borat” appearance had also brought him the trophy.
Germany goes away empty-handed at the Golden Globes
The twelve-year-old German Helena Zengel received nothing at the award ceremony. She was nominated in the category “Best Supporting Actress” for the western “News from the World”. The student had followed the awarding of the award on a live link from Berlin. The trophy went to Jodie Foster for her supporting role in the political thriller “The Mauritanian”.

In the series and television film categories, the British royal family series “The Crown” was the big winner of the evening with four awards. There were awards for best drama series, for Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles in the best male drama TV role, for Emma Corrin as Princess Diana in the same female category and for Gillian Anderson, who embodied Margaret Thatcher and the Globe for won best TV supporting role.
With “The Ladies’ Gambit”, the service also has the best miniseries of the year on offer. Anya Taylor-Joy plays a chess genius in it and won the award for best leading actress in a miniseries. In both categories, the German drama “Unorthodox”, directed by Maria Schrader, with Shira Haas in the leading role, came away empty-handed. Best comedy series was “Schitt’s Creek,” a warm-hearted Canadian series that already garnered a record number of awards at the Emmys earlier this year.

Also on Netflix are “I Care a Lot,” whose lead actress Rosamund Pike won the award for best female lead in a comedy as a fraudulent lawyer, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, for lead actor Chadwick Boseman posthumously six months after his death from cancer was named best actor in a drama in August. His widow Taylor Simone Ledward tearfully accepted the Golden Globe.
Advance criticism: Golden Globes under attack
US actress and singer Andra Day, who embodies jazz singer Billie Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”, was named best drama actress. In the category “Best Non-English Language Film” won the family drama “Minari” by US director Lee Isaac Chung, who brings in his own experiences as the child of South Korean immigrants in the rural US state of Arkansas. With “Minari”, shot mainly in the Korean language, films from Italy, France and Denmark, among others, were in the running.
Because of the corona pandemic, the gala was largely virtual this time, the nominees were switched on from locations all over the world – and still showed themselves in eye-catching looks. Comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the ceremony from separate stages in California and New York. The Golden Globes were awarded for the 78th time in Beverly Hills and New York. Only 90 international journalists who have been working in Hollywood for a long time decide on the awards from the Association of Foreign Press (HFPA) in 25 film and television categories.
This year there had been criticism of the association for the non-transparent membership criteria. In addition, the jurors were only white, the “Los Angeles Times” reported in advance. During the award ceremony, several members of the HFPA promised that blacks would also be accepted in the future. More than 9,000 filmmakers vote at the Oscars. The Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on April 25th.
