Giro d’Italia live in the ticker: 19th stage to the Santuario di Castelmonte mountain finish – fight for the pink jersey in the live ticker

The 19th Giro stage on Friday is the third last chance in the fight for overall victory – two mountain finishes and the final time trial are still to come.

Today the course first heads north and then with a detour to Slovenia in an arc around Udine to the final climb. After the flat start, four mountain classifications await, two in the 3rd and two in the 1st category.

The toughest chunk is Kolovrat in Slovenia with a ten kilometer climb at almost 10% gradient – even if this mountain is only 1145 meters high, it will be extremely difficult.

Giro ticker: Kämna stay tuned

Lorenzo Fortunato (Eolo-Kometa) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) are trying to get a little lead off the last climb. But Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) closes the gap quickly. The destination should be reached in half an hour at the latest, and the drivers are relatively quick today.

19th Giro stage live: The leading group works together

In the flat section, the five leaders Bouwman, Schmid, Valter, Vendrame and Tonelli still work well together. Your lead is reduced just a little to 6:45 minutes. In the field, one prepares for the battle of the classification drivers.

Giro ticker: Vendrame catches up

Vendrame was able to catch up with the front runners again as the descent progressed. Now there is another 15km flat section leading to the bottom of the final climb.

Live ticker, 19th Giro stage: Top teams formed

Behind the four Bora riders are Ineos for Richard Carapaz in the pink jersey and Bahrain for Mikel Landa. So nobody dared to go on the offensive on the penultimate mountain – everything boils down to a new duel on the final climb to the mountain classification.

Giro live: 4 p.m. – 33 kilometers to go

The field is now on the descent, the gap shrinks to 7:16 minutes. It is now a long downhill to the foot of the final climb. Now five riders at the top, Vendrame (ag2r) has joined Tonelli (Bardiani), Valter (Groupama), Bouwman (Jumbo) and Swiss Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step).

Giro ticker, stage 19: Bouwman wins mountain classification

The lead comes over the pass and Bouwman wins here too, this time ahead of Schmid, Tonelli and Valter. The Giro is now back in Italy from Slovenia and the gap between the field and the leaders is falling below eight minutes. Bora leads the peloton with Kelderman, Kämna, Buchmann and then Hindley.

19th Giro stage in the live ticker: Bora leads the field

Wilco Kelderman (Bora-hansgrohe) now increases the pace a bit in the field and the group is getting smaller. At the front, Tonelli has caught up with Schmid, Valter and Bouwman again.

Live ticker, 19th stage of the Giro: Field thins out massively

The steep ramps uphill now ensure that the remaining field thins out badly under Bora-hansgrohe’s pace work. The gap to the top is just under nine minutes, Tonelli falls behind there – a trio are still in the lead in this climb.

Giro live: 3:30 p.m. – 50 kilometers to go

Four riders left at the front: Hungarian Attila Valter Groupama), Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step) from Switzerland, Dutchman Koen Bouwman (Jumbo) and Alessandro Tonelli (Italy/Bardiani). The field is now 9:22 minutes behind again, good prospects for the stage win for the quartet.

Giro ticker, 19th stage: Leading group falls apart

The difficult climb begins and immediately the leading group falls apart! Clément Davy, Fernando Gaviria, Eduardo Affini and Edward Theuns have done their day’s work and fall back from the leading group on the first few meters of the climb. The pace was also too fast for Tobias Bayer. Davide Ballerini is just emptying his tank for his teammate Mauro Schmid.

19th Giro stage in the live ticker: Porte has to give up

Severe blow for Ineos and Richard Carapaz: Richie Porte has to give up the race! The Australian apparently fell ill overnight and is therefore not an important helper for these last two mountain stages. Bitter end of his last Giro.

Live ticker, 19th stage of the Giro: Slovenia has been reached

The short detour to Slovenia begins and will remain in the memories of the drivers for a long time with the rock-hard climb Kolovrat. There are still almost 20 kilometers to the start of this category 1 mountain classification. The key data for this test – it goes up to 1145 meters over 10.3 kilometers with an average gradient of 9.2%. There are ramps of up to 15% and only a short flat section halfway pushes the incline below 10%.

Giro live: 2:50 p.m. – 75 kilometers to go

The 12 drivers at the top again in the overview – the field is now 8:20 minutes behind them:
Koen Bouwman (NED) and Edoardo Affini (ITA/Jumbo) Fernando Gaviria (COL/UAE), Austrian Tobias Bayer (Alpecin), Swiss Mauro Schmid and Davide Ballerini (ITA/Quick-Step), Andrea Vendrame (ITA/ag2r ), Alessandro Tonelli (ITA/Bardiani), Magnus Cort (DEN/EF), Attila Valter (HUN) and Clement Davy (FRA/Groupama), Edward Theuns (BEL/Trek).

Giro ticker, 19th stage: Second mountain classification

The mountain classification of the 3rd category is completed, Koen Bouwman wins it again. The blue jersey will dress the Dutchman all the way to Verona. Slightly sloping terrain now – and the field still controls the 12 leaders with a deficit of eight minutes.

19th Giro stage in the live ticker: First mountain classification

Bouwman wins the 3rd category mountain classification, which means that victory in the special classification is almost impossible to rob him of. In the field, Bora is now almost full team strength in front of the field, only Patrick Gamper now has to let go uphill. The gap is now just under nine minutes.

Live ticker, 19th Giro stage: Field reacts

Now the field is lined up, Bora and Ineos stretch themselves in front of the peloton and start to control the distance. Just over ten minutes now the distance. The leading group has meanwhile come through the first of the two intermediate sprints, Gaviria wins it ahead of Theuns and Ballerini.

Giro live: 1:30 p.m. – 124 kilometers to go

The 12 drivers at the top again in the overview:
Koen Bouwman (NED) and Edoardo Affini (ITA/Jumbo) Fernando Gaviria (COL/UAE), Austrian Tobias Bayer (Alpecin), Swiss Mauro Schmid and Davide Ballerini (ITA/Quick-Step), Andrea Vendrame (ITA/ag2r ), Alessandro Tonelli (ITA/Bardiani), Magnus Cort (DEN/EF), Attila Valter (HUN) and Clement Davy (FRA/Groupama), Edward Theuns (BEL/Trek). No one is a threat in the overall or sprint rankings, the leader in the mountains (Bowman) is in the lead himself.

19th Giro stage live in the ticker: double-digit lead

Now the gap is even approaching ten minutes: This increases the chances of the 12 leaders to win the stage massively, because closing this gap would cost a lot of energy, who would be willing to do that after three hard weeks? Nine teams can therefore hope to triumph at the finish – but the battle in the overall standings will still be exciting today.

Live ticker, 19th Giro stage: distance increases massively

The lead continues to grow, now six minutes. It will be exciting when the field will start again – at least Ineos is not making any moves to pick up the pace: the drivers around Richard Carapaz in the pink jersey are still chewing and strengthening themselves for the difficult kilometers that are still to come today.

19th Giro stage live: 1:00 p.m. – 147 kilometers to go

The field now gets out of the pursuit – the road is now “closed” in a wide area, the distance increases quickly. No German driver at the top and also with a view to the overall standings, neither Bora nor Ineos nor Bahrain placed a professional there among the breakaways. The lead has now increased to over three minutes.

Giro live ticker, stage 19: 12 riders in front

The 12 drivers at the top in the overview:
Koen Bouwman and Edoardo Affini (Jumbo) Fernando Gaviria (UAE), Austrian Tobias Bayer (Alpecin), Swiss Mauro Schmid and Davide Ballerini (Quick-Step), Andrea Vendrame (ag2r), Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani), Magnus Cort ( EF), Attila Valter and Clement Davy (Groupama), Edward Theuns (Trek).

The gap now at 30 seconds – but the field now appears to be halting the pursuit for now.

Live in the ticker: 19th Giro stage – group separates

Now a gap opens and a larger group puts several seconds between them and the field. But from there, individual drivers continue to try to make the leap forward. The fight is not decided yet, the pace is still extremely high.

Koen Bouwman (Jumbo) in a mountain jersey is represented in the leading group of twelve riders, along with sprint star Fernando Gaviria (UAE) and also the Austrian Tobias Bayer (Alpecin) and the Swiss Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step). The lead is 20 seconds, but the DSM and Israel teams are chasing after them in the field.

Giro live ticker, stage 19: attacks in series

Attackers don’t have it easy here on a dead-straight track, no chance of escaping the gaze of the peloton, and on the flat course no short ramp helps to break away with a hard start. At 27 degrees, the speed hunt that is going on here is extremely sweaty. No group can pull away yet, although the drivers are constantly trying.

Ticker 19th stage: Start in the sun at 12:25 p.m

Let’s go to this 19th Giro stage, the weather is good, but the tension is high: It’s about the stage win, the overall standings – and against the grace period, depending on the driver. The beginning of these 178 kilometers is now through flat terrain, the first third of the stage almost flat – but then it gets all the more difficult.

The green starting flag is waved and the attacks begin immediately!

19th Giro stage: The favorites of the day

Is Mikel Landa going on the offensive early today? Who is more explosive on the short final climb: Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) or Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe)? Are we seeing a big lead group again with Jan Hirt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education – EasyPost)? There are still many unanswered questions before the final weekend, some of which will probably be clarified today. The focus today is particularly on the UAE riders, who, after Joao Almeida’s exit, have a free ride towards the stage win – so all eyes on Costa, Formolo, Ulissi & Co.!

Welcome to the live ticker of the 19th Giro stage!

The first 65 kilometers after the start in Marano Lagunare run flat in the hinterland of Friuli. The first sprint will take place in Buja after 55 kilometers. Then in Villanova Grotte (3rd category: 3.7 kilometers; 8%) and at the Passo di Tanamea (3rd category: 10 kilometers; 5%) vertical meters are collected. The following descent leads across the Slovenian border.

The hardest climb of the day is the Kolovrat (1st category: 10.3 kilometers; 9.2%). From there it is another 34 kilometers to the second sprint in Cividale del Friuli, where the final climb to the Santuario di Castelmonte (2nd category: 7.1 kilometers; 7.8%) begins. The stage is a total of 178 kilometers long.
