The deterioration will occur “against the context of a global food crisis”, driven by “new emerging conflicts” and restrictions on movement.

Acute food insecurity will deteriorate in 22 countries, where it is expected to increase in the next six months, warned the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) this Monday (29.05.2023).

Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen remain at the highest level of alert and Haiti, Burkina Faso, Mali and Sudan join them.

This is due to the severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods in Haiti, as well as in Burkina Faso and Mali, in addition to the recent outbreak of the conflict in sudanas there is a risk that the crisis will spread.

Meanwhile, the situation remains worrying in Pakistan, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Syria.

“The deterioration of acute food insecurity in pockets of hunger occurs in the context of a global food crisis,” the report explains. In addition, “new emerging conflicts, in particular the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan, are likely to drive global conflict trends and affect several neighboring countries.”

This situation will also be influenced by the slowdown in the economies in 2023 and the fact that, despite a year of relaxation in international food prices, domestic prices remain high, which will cause a general reduction in donor support to compensate world hunger.

This will be joined by extreme weather events such as heavy rains, tropical storms, cyclones, floods and droughts.
