Goalkeeper competition to make big decision for Rangers vs. To force hurricanes

One of the first storylines for the Rangers Hurricanes qualifying round is what will New York do in goal?

Head coach David Quinn has three options: Henrik Lundqvist, Igor Shesterkin or Alexandar Georgiev.

Before the NHL break on March 12, Georgiev (14) and Shesterkin (12) did most of the starts, with Lundqvist only doing five starts since the calendar change until 2020. (Shesterkin missed some time in late February after being injured in a car accident with teammate Pavel Buchnevich.)

The best-of-five series with Carolina will make Quinn a difficult decision. Shesterkin impressed in his 12 NHL missions (0.935 percent less force) and has established himself as the successor to Lundqvist. Veteran Lundqvist, whose future is in the air in New York, has an ESSV of 0.919% in 30 games this season and was 3-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season.

“We have three people and I like our depth in this position,” Rangers President John Davidson told reporters Thursday. “I can’t wait for the puck to drop to the training camp just to watch. There will be a lot of sub-groups, lots of little stories that will turn into big stories. Who will be the starting goalkeeper? If this is a best-of-5 series, this is not a long series and you want to get off to a good start. The coaches have to make this decision. “

When NHL training camps begin in mid-July, players were told, four months have passed since New York’s last game. Any battles or achievements before the stop will be reset in this unique return to play format. That should make it an open competition for the three goalkeepers. A short series also means little room for error, and aside from something unexpected, it should be Shesterkin’s kink to start.

“I know we will have the three boys here and I think all three are excited,” said Davidson. “I know that Hank skated. This will be a coach’s decision. That is what it is. The trainers make decisions. I think they will see and see how the camp works. It will be a battle. “
