Palm Beach Gardens – Germany’s top golfer Martin Kaymer was eliminated early from his first tournament after a three-month break from competition.
The 37-year-old from Mettmann played a good round of 67 at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, but clearly missed the cut after the weak opening round of 78 the day before with a total of 145 strokes.
Stephan Jäger qualified for the two decisive rounds at the weekend on the difficult par 70 course in Florida. The US-based German dropped from tenth to tied 41st on Friday after a round of 73 with 141 shots. The American Daniel Berger took the lead in the PGA Tour tournament, worth 8 million US dollars, with 130 strokes.
The two-time major winner Kaymer had played his last tournament at the end of November and announced a longer break in view of the imminent birth of his first child. In mid-January, his girlfriend Irène Scholz gave birth to their son Sam.
