Government advances national curfew to 6 p.m.

This Thursday, January 14, the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, announced the extension to the entire metropolitan territory of the curfew at 6 p.m. The purpose of this measure is to fight against the spread of new variants of the coronavirus. The option of setting up a third containment in the coming days has not been completely ruled out.

A press conference without surprise. This Thursday, January 14, before the speech of several members of the government, the foreign press had largely anticipated the decisions that would be taken, and it did not miss its forecasts. “The biggest measure that should be taken is the implementation of a 6 pm curfew throughout France”, this morning already announced the Brussels daily La Libre Belgique. And it turns out that the Prime Minister has indeed extended this restriction to the whole of France.

To justify this choice, Jean Castex spoke of a “Graduated and proportionate response” at the level of circulation of the coronavirus, which would not yet justify a third confinement. However, to counter the spread of the English variant (more contagious), the government decided to tighten the screw, in order to avoid what the London newspaper The Times described as “An English-style chaos scenario”.
